I love Marketing
From learning more about the latest in content marketing (I’d recommend listening to This Old Marketing, a good way to spend an hour) to just testing and improving how best to use social media I love all things marketing. It’s something I view as both a job but also a hobby because for me taking part in a chat like #TwitterSmarter isn’t work.
Random fact about me: I love GIFs, a lot!!
I love blogging but also analysing what works best and what doesn’t. I’m one of those people who when it comes to writing can hit a zone and just write stuff. I don’t overlook research though especially in an era where you can find the answer to anything on Google/YouTube. I love blogging and have been doing it for 5 years. It’s just one of those things I like to do and again it’s also part job, part hobby to me. I’ve started a new blog here so watch this space for new posts on all things marketing and well me.
Random fact about me: I wrote a blog about the marketing lessons I learned from Schliners List and Django Unchained
I love social media, from doing my thesis on social media and word of mouth for small businesses I realised:
“Wait I could get a job from this”
This resulted in me starting off with an E-commerce site that grew to 95 businesses (right out of college so no pressure). Social media is such a fast moving area of marketing and what’s fun but also challenging is mastering these new updates and making sure you’re making the most of your digital footprint. There is so much to learn almost every day. Which is good and bad, however few things are as good as when I take part in a chat or create a campaign that generates results (please see attached CV).
In a nutshell I just love marketing, even in college the marketing subjects were ones that just came naturally to me and where I looked forward to the lectures and presentations I had to do
Random fact about me: I’m one of the rare few who isn’t terrified of doing presentations.
It’s not just Marketing I Love
If you know me then you’ll know I love sport. As in I’ll talk to someone from Toronto about the prospects for the Maple Leafs in the NHL (go Devils) or can anyone stop another Cavs Warriors finals series in the NBA (Go Spurs Go!!). Few things help start a conversation like asking someone where they’re from and then talking about sport. It’s a hobby that’s moved up a level this year as I host a weekly sports show on Limerick City Community Radio. When asked could I talk about sport for an hour I answered:
There’s just so much to talk about and it never stands still. There’s always a storyline to latch on to and few things beat a live game (see Thomond Park below or as I like to call it home)
Random fact about me: I won a county hurling medal scoring more than anyone else on the field, combined.
I Love Books
I remember this quote from the character Death in The Hogfather:
“Human beings make life so interesting. Do you know, that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to invent boredom.”
With a good book, you don’t have to worry about this. Few things beat finding a spot and just reading a terrific book (whether it be on a bus or a quiet cafe). My favourite genres would be fantasy, sport, and history. I could go on all day about my favourite books but I managed to solve that when I guest hosted for “Kickstart your week on LCCR”. Give it a listen.
My top random book recommendation: A Colossal Failure of Common Sense which chronicled the fall of Lehman Brothers, fantastic read!!!
I love a good TV Series
I’m a little odd in that I don’t binge shows. I’ll watch it one by one day by day for the simple reason if something is that good you should really savour it. A good tv series can add so much and the really good series are ones that will open you up to other new experiences. What do I mean by this? Well, I love Friday Night Lights and the tv series introduced me to a band called Explosions in the Sky who are now one of my favourite bands. A great tv show really is something to be savoured and not rushed (like I do with my food).
TV Series I’d recommend – Battlestar Galactica (just amazing)
Did I mention I Love Movies
My dad often says “Is there any movie you haven’t seen?!?!?”. While it’s a bitexaggeratedd I do like a good movie (who doesn’t). What I love as well is finding a random movie that’s terrific (Let the Right One In) and also a movie that is a great adaption of a book (LOTR). Movies are also a fun way of starting a chat because like music everyone has their own favourites.
Great movie I’d recommend – Saving Private Ryan
Bad movie I’d recommend – The Room (so bad it’s amazing!!!)
So that’s Me in a Nutshell
I’m one of those people who you’ll see at an event constantly on their phone as I’m networking online as well. I’m also someone who can roll out a blog in under an hour (case in point).
You’ll also find me talking about the latest in rugby (how competitive will the South African teams be in the Pro14?!?!?), but you’ll also find me reading a book in a cafe (I’d recommend Winter Colours as well), and yes I’ve watched Game of Thrones and I’m one of those who read the books as well.
So that’s me, check me out on Twitter for all the latest in marketing but also from when I’m watching a game and losing the head!!
